Dr. Richard Beards has been at Temple since 1964 and has served actively in the Temple community, especially by promoting continuing education in the Liberal Arts for working adult students. He was the Director of the Masters in Liberal Arts (MLA) Program from 1983-2000.
Dr. Beards' research and teaching interests include Nineteenth Century British fiction, American Studies, African- American literature, and Political fiction. He has taught and published in all of these subjects both in the United States and abroad. He has also published on the work of the African-American photographer John W. Mosley and has curated and organized exhibitions of his work.
He is currently researching, with the goal of publishing, the journals (1837-1843) of Lavinia Townsend, a Salem NJ Quaker and abolitionist.
