Requirements | Distribution of Credits | College Requirements | University Requirements

Major Requirements

A B.A. in English requires 36 semester hours in upper-level English courses. These hours must include

  • Five Core English Courses —ENG W100 Introduction to English Studies; ENG 0114 Survey of English Literature, Beginnings to 1660; ENG 0115 Survey of English Literature, 1660-1900; ENG 0116 Survey of American Literature I; ENG 0117 Survey of American Literature II
  • Three 100-Level English Courses
  • Three 200-Level English Courses
  • One Senior Seminar: A 300-Level Capstone Course

Students may choose to structure their seven upper-level courses by taking multiple courses in American Literature; International Literature and Film; Language, Literature, and Rhetoric; or Rereading the Canon. Tracks do not appear on your diploma; however, they can be useful ways of describing your choice of upper-level electives on your resume and applications for graduate or professional school.

Distribution of Credits for the English Major
  1. Transfer credits in English
    • All upper-level transfer semester hours in English accepted by Temple University count toward the 36 semester hours.
    • All English majors must, however, complete at least a total of 18 semester hours of English at Temple University.
  2. English courses taken at the Ambler, Tyler, and Center City campuses or at our overseas campuses count toward the English major.
  3. Career internship
    • Students may repeat English 200 (Career Internship) up to four times. However, English majors may count only 3 semester hours earned in English 200 toward the requirements for the major.
  4. Creative writing courses
    • Students may repeat any Creative Writing course (English 107, 108, 109) once, but no more than four of these courses will count toward the 123 semester hours required for graduation in the College of Liberal Arts. Only two of these courses will count toward the 36 semester hours required for an English major.
  5. Special Topics courses
    • With the approval of the undergraduate chair, students may take courses titled Special Topics (English 150, 281, and 282) more than once as long as the content is different each time the course is taken.
  6. Courses outside English
    • No semester hours earned in courses offered by departments other than English count toward the English major.
    • No semester hours earned in courses offered as a part of a program outside English count toward the English major.
    • Exception: The Undergraduate Committee must approve all requests from students, faculty members, or other departments and programs to allow non-English courses to count toward the English major.
  7. Credit for relevant academic and life experience
    • The Undergraduate Committee must approve all student requests to count toward the English major any credits which are accepted by Temple University and the College of Liberal Arts under the University's "Credit for Relevant Academic and Life Experience" provisions.
    • No more than 6 semester hours obtained under the University's "Credit for Relevant Academic and Life Experience" provisions count toward the 36 semester hours required for the major.
  8. Independent Study
    • Independent Study (English 288 and 289) proposals must be submitted to the Undergraduate Office at least two weeks before the end of the semester preceding the one for which the student intends to register for the course (for fall semester, April 15; for spring semester, November 15).
    • No more than one Independent Study may be counted toward the 36 semester hours required for the major.
    • An Independent Study course cannot be used to substitute for the W300 senior seminar/senior capstone requirement.
    • Further information is available in the Undergraduate Office.

College of Liberal Arts Requirements

All College of Liberal Arts (CLA) majors must successfully complete at least 123 credits in order to graduate. Of those 123 credits, 90 credits must be from CLA or College of Science and Technology (CST) courses (excluding Engineering). Of those 90 credits, 45 credits must be from upper-level (100, 200, or 300-level) CLA or CST courses (excluding Engineering).

Six of these upper-level credits must be taken in departments outside of your major curriculum division. As students in the humanities division, English majors must complete two upper-level CLA or CST courses (100, 200, or 300-level) in either the social science or the natural/mathematical science divisions. For a listing of the departments that fall into these divisions, see the College of Liberal Arts section of the Undergraduate Bulletin.
